CGC Test Requirements- How does your dog shape up?
Test 1
Accepting a Friendly Stranger
Your dog should be asked to sit and must maintain the sit as a friendly stranger walks
up to you and says hello and shakes your hand. Your dog must remain sitting for this
part.

Test 2
Sitting or Standing for Petting
Ideally, your dog will be able to sit as a stranger approaches and allow petting on the
head or side of the body. Your dog is allowed to stand if this is more comfortable for
your dog. Your dog should not shy away, growl or move from your side as the
stranger approaches and pets.

Test 3
Appearance and Grooming
Your dog should permit a stranger, such as a groomer, veterinarian or friend examine
his ears and touch each of his front feet, as well as allow the person to brush him
lightly.

Test 4
Out for a Walk on a Loose Leash
You should be able to demonstrate that your dog is in control and can walk near you
on a loose leash. This will include a left turn, a right turn, and an about turn with one
stop. Your dog doesn’t have to sit when you stop but should remain close to you.

Test 5
Walking Through a Crowd
Your dog should be able to move about politely in pedestrian traffic while remaining
under control and on a loose leash.

Test 6
Sit and down on Cue/Staying in Place
Your dog should be able to sit, lie down and stay in place as you move 20 feet away.
Your dog will be on a long line during this portion of the test. After you walk to the
end of the line, you will walk back and release your dog from the stay.

Test 7
Coming when Called
You dog will have to come when called from a distance of 10 feet. You may instruct
your dog to sit, down or stay, before you call, but is not necessary.

Test 8
Reaction to Another Dog
Your dog should be able to remain calm and remain at your side as you approach
another person and dog from about 10 yards. You will need to stop, shake hands with
the other person and say hello while your dog remains calm and shows no more than
mile interest.

Test 9
Reactions to Distractions
Your dog should be able to remain calm and show only mild curiosity or interest in a
distraction such as a book dropping or a jogger moving by. Your dog cannot panic,
show fear, aggression or try to run away.

Test 10
Supervised Separation
Your dog will need to remain calm and maintain good manners when left with a
trusted person for 3 minutes. Your dog should show no more than mild agitation or
nervousness. Whining or barking is not permitted. Your dog is allowed to move
around but not pull or yank on leash. The Evaluator may talk to or pet your dog but
will not give the dog excessive attention or play with the dog to keep him calm.
